A SURVEY OF POLYTECHNIC SECRETARIAL EDUCATION AS AN INSTRUMENT OF SELF-RELIANCE

This paper examines secretarial education offered in the polytechnic as an instrument of self-reliance, finding out the extent to which it can be used as an instrument to solve the problem of unemployment. It sets out to determine whether or not secretarial education equips its graduates with enough knowledge and skills to be self reliant. Using survey research method, a questionnaire was drawn to collect data which were analysed using simple mean. Findings, from the analysis, revealed that secretarial graduates are well equipped with skills and knowledge that enable them to be self reliant without
depending on white collar jobs for their sustenance. Based on the findings it was recommended that secretarial education and the polytechnic system should be allowed to take their pride of place through proper funding and provision of state of the art equipment.
