Abstract: A. vogeliana is among medicinal plants employed traditionally to alleviate anaemic condition in south western Nigeria. This study assessed the hematinic potential of A. vogeliana leaf ethanolic extract on phenyl hydrazine-induced anaemia in female rats with the view to affirm its acclaimed folklore therapeutic uses. Anaemia was induced in female wistar rats with phenyl hydrazine at a dose of 30 mg kg-1 bwt by subcutaneous administration. A. vogeliana extract was administered to anemic rats at 400 and 800 mg/kg body weight once daily for 21 days. After 21 days, the animals were sacrificed and whole blood collected for haematological analysis. The result revealed increase (but not significant) in PCV of anaemic treated rats compared to anaemic untreated rat. Conversely, there was significant increase in haemogobin (p<0.005), red blood cells (p<0.05) as well as white blood cells (p<0.05) levels in the anaemic treated rats when compared with anaemic untreated group. The group treated with 800 mg/kg bwt of the extract showed greater hematinic potential compared with the group treated with 400 mk/kg bwt of the extract. In conclusion, this study shows that A. vogeliana leaf exhibits have blood boosting capability which substantiates the folkloric use of the leaf in the management of anaemic condition.
