Lecaniodiscus cupanioides is a folk medicine common to West-Africa sub-region and it’s known for its medicinal properties such as ability to prevent chronic diseases e.g atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes and also useful in the treatment of wounds, sores, abdominal swelling, fevers and measles. The stem-bark of Lecaniodiscus cupanioides were subjected to cold maceration method of extraction in different media (n-hexane, ethylacetate and methanol) and the extract were tested for antioxidant using radical scavenging capacities using DPPH method. The results were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and the P- value at 95% confidence limit was determined. The result of the n-hexane extract has no significant difference from the ascorbic acid while the methanol and ethylacetate extract are significantly different at 99% and 95% confidence limit respectively from ascorbic acid. Hence n-hexane extract is most active among them; these could be attributed to the presence of terpenoids and alkaloids that are present in non-polar extract of the plant. The active N- hexane fraction can be subjected to column chromatography for separation and purification of the active compounds, and full characterization of the
isolated compounds should be done.
